REFURBISHMENT RESIDENTIAL PROJECT

The Ford Building

Hazlemere were excited to be part of this ambitious project at the former HQ of the Ford Motor Company in Brentwood, Essex.

Following acquisition by Land Charter Homes, new life was planned for the iconic building with the creation of 330 luxury one, two and three bedroom apartments over seven floors.

Initial conversations regarding the replacement of the windows began in April 2020, with project plans already well underway, when strategy changed from refurbishing to replacing the original steel windows.

Always the team to embrace a challenge the planning requirements stipulated that the original lines of the building must be kept, so an alternative design was required to avoid bracketing the planned curtain walling to the front of the building’s columns. A T-shape section was bespoke designed for the north block to retain the depth of the columns that the design brief called for. This special design fitted into the extended glazing pockets, leaving the lines of the existing building unadulterated by the application of the curtain walling.

The large amount of green body tint glass required for the project had to come from one production run to ensure exact colour match, and the project also called for special length aluminium profile.

The scheme also specified tilt before turn aluminium windows in RAL 7038 from AluK, with commercial automatic swing doors at the main entrances.

As you would expect with a residential refurbishment of a building this size, fire compartmentalisation was also part of the contracted works. Priced and designed during the initial COVID-19 lockdown, Hazlemere were on site in October 2020 to begin the large installation requirement.
