Aluminium is extracted from a mineral called Bauxite. Bauxite is found in abundance near to the Earth’s surface. This makes it easy to extract meaning minimal environmental disruption. Extracted aluminium is virtually 100% recyclable. Aluminium can be melted down repeatedly without losing any of its quality.
Recycling aluminium saves almost 95% of the greenhouse gas emissions compared to its original production process. Recycling one tonne of aluminium saves 9 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Aluminium de-construction
Aluminium is totally de-constructible. When used aluminium products are melted down, it is easy to separate any other elements such as screws, powder coating, thermal breaks, and hardware. When the aluminium reaches melting point, it separates from both the lighter and heavier materials. The lighter materials rise to the top, while the heavier materials sink to the bottom and are disposed of later.
Any gases released during the process are burned, preventing their release into the environment. The process can be repeated over and over again with no negative effects on the quality of the aluminium.
